Letter #34 05/30/11 Big News! Transfer!!

hey family!
well this ones going to be short because i want to write to landon!
but holy cow, looks like there is still a ton!!! of snow at the cabin.
geezz.   i hope the cabins ok when the snow starts to melt.  i wish i
could come help you sandbag!! haha.
sounds like its been a busy week.  glad everything worked out well
with moms order and dads activities with the priests.

well the big news ------   i{m getting transferred!!!

i{m going to Cuidad del Carmen

the area is called puerto real.  but idk exactly where it is yet.  but
its an island!!!!!!! so i{m going to be beachside again ha cool huh

the other big news,  even bigger really is that i{m going to be
District Leader there!  AAAAAhhhhhhhh!!!!!!  they called me last night
and told me i should sit down before they told me my transfer. and then
they told me i was going to be district leader. mostly i feel
extremely unprepared. ha.  the missionaries from the states here dont
usually get called to district leader till after the year mark.....
i seriously thought i was going to be the junior companion again.  to
someone with some experience.  i{ve never had a companion with
experience ha.  but nope looks like i{m going to be the senior
companion and district leader.  mostly i feel pretty weak. but i
remembered last night something that brother bradley told us in
priests quorum about his mission.  that we dont get called to the
assignments we{re prepared for, we get called to be what the lord
wants us to be and we have to rise to the bar.     but i also know that as i
put my trust in the lord he{ll help me to be able to complete
this assignment.

anyway. i{m going to leave it at that and i{lll talk to you all next week =)
love

Letter #33 05/23/11 A visit from Elder Cook!!

hey family,

this week was super good.  the conference with elder cook was legit.
We woke up that morning at 3-30 to get ready because we had to be at
the stake center at 5am.  from there we took a bus with all the other
missionaries in coatza to villahermosa.  and at 9 am we had the
meeting with elder cook.  it was sweet.  all the missionaries from the
whole mission were there. and our group was the first to arrive so we
were on the 3rd row.  i was like 10 , 15 feet away from him.  at the
start when he came in he and his wife took the time to shake every
missionaries hand.  the choir sang "this is the christ" in spanish.
and then elder cook took some time to do a question answer session.
and some of the missionaries got to ask the apostle questions.  but
they had to be questions focused in the mission-- haha.   so there
were questions about preach my gospel. and how to be better
missionaries.   and elder cook is a fountain of knowledge seriously.
before the person had even finished the question he had scriptures to
answer it.    he was powerful, when he spoke.  i feel bad for all the
spanish speakers. because elder cook spoke in english -- they had a
translator but he wasnt the best and its not quite the same as hearing
and understanding it from his own voice!    after the question answer
he spent a ton of time talking about preach my gospel and how it
really should be a handbook for life.  it teaches every young man how
to become the man that the lord expects him to be.  in all of his
church callings for later in life.    elder cook says the difference
between a missionary from before predicar mi evangelio to a missionary
after is that the missionary after  you can ask to speak in a stake
conference 5 min before the meeting and he{d be able to do it.    and
i was thinking about that and it really is true.  because preach my
gospel teaches you all the doctrine that you need to know, but also
expects you to apply that doctrine differently, to the needs of every
individual.   you{re not stuck with a routine.  missionaries with
preach my gospel shouldnt have fear to speak with anyone about any
point of doctorine because they{re not confined to memorized lessons.

anyway-- rant--

ha.  also the wife of elder cook talked and oh my heavens i{ve never
seen a more loving person in my life.  you could just see it in her
face, she was glowing with light and when she spoke she was so happy
and i dont think anyone in the room could help but smile because of
the spirit that she had.  she was seriously glowing.  she spoke about
the power of the hymns in teaching the gospel and also importance of
developing christ like atributes.   -- thats my fav. chapter in preach
my gospel by the way.  chapter 6.

anyway.  after he got done speaking and the meeting was over. the
prayer was said and everything.  he was leaving the stage. and then
turned around and went to the mic and said "during the prayer i felt
that i had the need to say something in particular to those young men
who have family living in the wasatch front, i{d like to meet with all
these missionaries in the high priests room"  so we went to that room
and basically everyone was freaking out because he said it so
seriously, like something terrible had happened. all the missionaries
thought there had been another earthquake or something.  but no- ha.
he spoke with us for like 5 min on the importance of not using
facebook in the mission-- yikes. apparently some missionaries in
mexico have problems with that.. yikes.

but i got to shake his hand again after that meeting it was pretty cool!

also after the conference i was able to chat with elder tlachi for
like 20 min which was sooooo good.  ah i miss that guy.  he was
seriously a great companion.

but ya tranfers
this next week. idk if i{ll be going or not.  i might find out
tomorrow or this coming sunday. we{ll see.  i have a meeting with the
president tomorrow.  he{s interviewing all the missionaries in
coatzacualcos.

investigators.  we found a new investigator this week, se llama R!
she{s awesome, she has a 8 year old daughter and the first thing she
told us when we knocked the door  was that she thinks she{d like to
join our church!!! basically she{s the most gold of gold investigator
ever.   she came to church yesterday and loved it.   and so did her
daughter.  she has a baptismal date for jun 4th

also we found another investigator who{s almost as gold as her who
also came to church,  her name is A and she also had a daughter
of about 8.  she{s really really really intelligent. i think she was a
part of a another christian church.  but left it.  she understands
everything that we teach her.   we{re going to visit her in like 20
min ha.

anyway.  thats the big news from this week.  i{ll be sure to let you
know what happens with transfers
love you all
sorry this letter is a novel.
- elder lloyd

From Chat:

all too.  tell the family i love them. extended and immediate!
i{m pretty pumped to meet with my president. i {ll tell you how that
went next week too.     love ya alll.    gtg. but i{ll talk to ya all next
week

Letter #32 05/16/11 An oven inside an oven! Hot!

hey family!

well this week has been another interesting one!  firstly, thanks for
your letters.  letters from all, even jack and slate. that was
awesome.   and you can tell slater that i havent forgotten that he{s
my brother haha.  tell grandma and grandpa thanks a bunch for sending
me emails. i always like to hear whats going on with them.
to answer your emails from this week-- i dont think i{ll need boots.
my shoes are pretty good.  (random shoe note- remember how i got those
high top dress shoes-- pretty much all the missionaries in my zone
think they{re legit)  i dont think it{ll be a problem. and if it is i
think i can find some boots here so its alright!!   also in your
letters you said something about rob being fixed -- i didnt even know
he was broken -- what??  what happened there-- jackson didnt crash,
did he? =P

well this weeks been interesting for me.  wednesday i went to
villahermosa with my companion because he had a problem with some visa
stuff.  when we arrived to mexico they gave us a visa travel card
which basically gives us permission to travel in mexico. if the police
stop us in the street they ask for that.  but elder eberle left his in
a taxi in his old area-- ha. yikes.   so we had to go to villahermosa
to go to some government building and ask for a new one.   so we went
to villahermosa, and my companion spent the day running around the
city getting things fixed with that and i spent the day with the
president of the mission!!!  i dont know how i get so lucky.  i was
just sitting in the office of the mission and he came in and grabbed
me and said -elder lloyd, we wouldnt want you getting bored here-  and
we went out to teach some people. it was legit.  i think i{ve probably
had more attention from the president than most other missionaries in
this past month ha.   and the best part was when we were driving back
to the office from a lesson that we taught (the president and i)   and
i got to share with him something i learned in my personal study this
past week.  it was awesome.  ah  basically president casteƱeda is a
rock. ah. i{ve never met someone more powerful.  its crazy.

so that was my wednesday.  and at the end of the day my companion
hadnt fixed everything with the visa still. so we{re going to have to
go back another day probably!  also-- the package you sent me arrived
the day that i was there in villahermosa! so i have it now!  oh my
reeses.  and snickers and milkyway holy moly!!!! anyway--

basically other than that, the biggest news this week has been with
the weather.  -- i thought it was hot before-- and it was,  it
was like an oven in april. but this week has been like an oven inside
an oven.  people here say that its reached tempratures of 43 celsius,
i think thats 115 farenhiet.  but idk.  basically didnt think it was
possible to live in that kind of heat.  ha.  the people who live here
are sweating the whole day.  now imagine me and my companion who are
from climates that are cold. ha.    yikes.     but i think my
companion has it worse.   he{s had a rough week with the heat i think.

as for investigators.

we found one of those -perfect- investigators this week though ah.
she{s sooooo prepared.  she let us in and said that she{d like to join
the church before we started teaching anything.  she said she hasnt
had religion in her life for a long time and she{s always seen us in
the street and is really interested in learning about what we believe.
without us inviting her, she told us that shes going to come to church
this week.  --she has a child and is separated from her husband.
we{ve got an appointment with her tomorrow so that should be pretty
exciting!

also exciting-- tomorrow we{re going to villahermosa to have a mission
conference-- and elder cook is going to be there to speak with us!!!!!
ah!!!!!!!!!!   an apostle! i{m not sure but i dont think that all
missionaries get the chance to have an apostle come to their mission.
i{m so pumped to go tomorrow and hear the direction that the lord has
for us and for this mission!

well i gtg.   but i love you all, and i{ll be excited to hear from you
next week!!!

Letter #31 05/09/11 Short Letter!!

Hey family,

ah it was so good to be able to talk with you all yesterday! i love
your tapes that you send, but they{re not quite the same as being able
to chat with you and ask-answer questions.  only 7 more months and
we{ll be doing it again.   i know it had been 5 months since i
had talked to you all but it didnt feel like 5 months.  and i have a
feeling these next 7 are going to .fly. by.  it scares me actually how
fast time flies.

well family. this weeks going to be a bit short so i can write some
friends.  but i{ll chat with you all next week! =)

elder lloyd

Letter #30 05/02/11 & A Chat with Mom!

ah family!

its good to be writing you again.  these past two weeks have felt a
bit longer than usual with the whole adjusting to the new compaƱero
thing.  but its all good.   ha.
thanks a bunch for your letters.  i love reading them.  the letters
from jack and slate were especially good. sounds like jacksons hurting
quite a few people in lacrosse. ah i wish i could see it.  i{m a bit
scared to play with him when i get back.   we{ll have to be on the
same team -- deal.

so this week has been pretty good.  we had a zone conference tuesday
that was really really good.  and then afterward the president came to
my area to teach a lesson with my companion and i.  it was pretty
sweet.  he is incredible.  i really have never met in my life a man
more in harmony with the spirit.  when he speaks he speaks like the
sons of mosiah -- with power and authority.  ah its crazy.  he{s way
bold and he says things exactly how they are,  but with a ton of love
at the same time.  and people listen to him like he{s the prophet.
so that was an awesome experience to be able to teach with him,
and then friday i had to drop something off to him before he left
coatzacualcos and he took us contacting and it was sweet.  --- so this
week i{ve been trying to apply what i{ve learned from the president.

i{d tell you more about our investigators but to be honest we{ve had a
few dissapointing weeks investigators wise.  seriously.   bah.  we{ve
had two baptismal dates fall through.  an investigator named K that we{ve been teaching was going to be baptised this saturday,  but
she was hospitalized with some sickness and we havent heard from her
in like 4 days.  yikes.   so thats going to be postponed a bit.
she{s way ready for baptism though.  holy cow.    she{s got a firm
testimony of the book of mormon.  we{ll probably put her baptism for
the 14 of may.
and then hermana C is our only other person who{s ready for baptism.
but really we{re waiting on J and M to get the priesthood so
that they can baptize her.    M is doing well. really
well. i just saw him in the street not 15 min ago.  i hadnt seen him
in 2 weeks.  but he gave me the biggest hug.   he{s been reading the
book of mormon everyday.  he takes it to work and reads it when he{s
not busy.  ah he{s a rock.
-- i have like 10 other people that we{re working with but everyone
has a different problem-- problems with leaving behind past
traditions, some arent married, some have family problems, some want
more time.  its frustrating. ha.  but we{ll keep working with each of
them and little by little we{ll get some success.

but on a lighter note, its really really hot here. i{m like melting or
something.  seriously during the day i seriously think my insides are going
to be cooked.   its like an oven. and it doesnt get better until about an
hour after the sun goes down, and then if theres a breeze its liveable.
this past week i spent a whole night trying to cool myself down
ha.  but we bought some new fans so thats going to be good. i didnt
have a fan for the whole time i was with elder tlachi.

-- Mothers day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    AH!!!!!!
i{}m pretty pumped to hear you all and talk with you.  its going to be
sooo good.  make a list of things you want to ask me.       i{m so
glad i{ll be able to hear your voices again. i dont know if youre going to
have to call or if i{m going to... idk. we{ll see.  i{m going to send you an
email during the week w- more info.  but it will be sunday i think
and just so you know, we do have daylight savings time in mexico.
right now the time says 4:40

to answer your other questions,  i{m doing well.  i{m staying
hydrated.  i{m eating.  and i dont think i{m any taller. and i think
i{ve lost weight.  not a ton. but a little.   ha.  i have a p{b and j
sandwich every morning and eat chocolate and protein bars throughout
the day.

anyway, good to hear that osamas dead.  finally. what else is going on in
the news.  what was that whole thing with egypt and some other country
about.   we dont get much news here. because we cant watch tv ha.

so this past week there was a fair in coatza and it reminded me of the
fair we went to before i left mom!! ah that was so fun. thanks so much
for spending that time with me before i left!  i{m so grateful to
have parents that i know love and care about me.

also, this week, cade rose and mandy morgan and lauren beck wrote me!
ah!  well actually they wrote me in march but i got their letters tuesday!
that was awesome.

well i{m going to stop writing so we can chat a little. love you all.  say
hi to the cousins aunts uncles and grandparents for me.
-elder lloyd

>>> Hi Matt!  I'm here when/if you can chat!

>> ok i can chat now!!!!

> Slater is here eating cheese on a rosemary cracker and he says to tell you
> he loves you.  That experience with your President sounds amazing.  Do you
> feel like he likes you?  You get along well with him??

tell slater i love him a bunch.   and yes i seriously love my
president  he{s incredible.  and i know he loves me. ha he loves every
missionary even the worst missionaries.  but ya we get along well.  and
i think he likes me.     he{s got this thing where he can like look at
your soul or something.  he can tell if youre here for the right
reasons.  elder tlachi was one of his favorites. and he{s starting to
treat me like he treated elder tlachi so thats good!!
i{m doing well.  just trying to do my best.

> I'm going to put both your names in the temple this week along with J.
> Maybe you can get some help from the Lord!!!  Try to focus on the
> people there in Mexico!  You won't be in Coatza probably
> for more than another month!  So try to enjoy it!

yeah, i know i dont have too much more time here and i want to help
all these people that i{ve been teaching for so much time to progress
ah.  theres like 4 different families that i{ve been teaching for
months and i just want them to progress so badly, they{re soooo close.
but at times i feel like i{m just not quite the missionary enough to
help them bah. so frustrating. but thanks for the prayers.  i{m going
to keep giving it my all like always =)

> I know you will.  That's all you can do, you know?  There's a primary

thanks mom and dad!!   love you so much.   i gtg though.  i{m excited
to be able to talk with you this week.  only two more times after this
time! crazy eh!  love you a bunch.
